Why is my Bessie Pease Gutmann print in Reverse?
Why is my Bessie Pease Gutmann print "A little bit of heaven" the reverse of all the other prints I have seen of this? It is in it's original oval frame and the label on the back says Hugo Lang & co. (1931) Ltd. 19 Whitechapel Liverpool.
When I say it's the reverse, I mean that where the babies head is on the left of the picture on all the prints of "A little bit of heaven" my print has the babies head on the right hand side. The signature isn't back to front but it is on the left rather than the right hand side.
She was the most popular of her day, " A LBoH"published 1916,millions of copies were produced. Hundreds of thousands survive making it one of the lower value collectibles. I'm sure you've checked, but first: you're sure its not "awakening", eyes are closed, face is down etc?
That would suggest that yours is not an original print, but in fact a very late rerun or that yours IS an original print and the others you have seen are not - chances are obviously against that. Is the signature EXACTLY the same, though misplaced. Compare it to another copy and if they are exactly the same then one has been lifted and moved. If they are different it would suggest the signature was made a different times. Not likely! It is vaguely possible that you have an original from which the prints were made, but, since the original is a rectangular format it is infinitely more likely that it is simply a knock off copy. How long has it been in your family? Do you know any provenance of the piece you have...where was it purchased, by whom and when. Is there an edition number on it i.e.: 25/300 which would mean it was the 25th copy pulled of a total edition of 300 copies. There were, as mentioned, millions of copies made so plagiarism by a dept store of the era is easily predictable, especially considering your publication date is 15 years after the original edition.
