Which part of Armenia did the Ayvazian people come from?
My grandfather's surname was Aivazovsky. It is believed that my family is related to the painter Ivan Ivazovsky. My grandfather was from Armavir, Russia. It's said that the people of that town come from Armavir, Armenia and named the Russian town after their original hometown in Armenia. Another theory is that the Ayvazian people came from Gyumri. Are any of these or all of them correct theories? Are there any other explanations? How can I trace my Armenian geneology? Any positive answers will be greatly appreciated.

Armavir (Russian: Армави́р) is city in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Kuban River, at 45°0′N 41°06′E. Population: 193,964 (2002 Census); 144,000 (1969). Armavir used to be the second biggest industrial center of Krasnodar Krai after Krasnodar.
The settlement was founded in 1839 by Armenian peoples as Armyanskiy aul. It was renamed in 1848 in honour of ancient capital of Armenia with the same name and received the town status in 1914. During the Russian Civil War of 1918–1920, a number of brutal combats took place near the city. The Taman army's military campaign ended in Armavir in 1918. The Soviet authority was established in Armavir in March of 1920. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, the city was occupied by the German army. It was liberated in January of 1943.
